According to UNESCO, the process of making barkcloth existed before weaving was invented hence UNESCO declared it a “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage” in 2005 .

Uganda was the first official Country to Join the African Textile Museum's  permanent collection. IN 2021 , Unesco has cited Barkcloth as a MASTERPIECE! The ATM Museum has become the first custodian of this Masterpiece, We salute Uganda for their vision and support.
